Modernizing ALM for Automotive Safety and Innovation

Veoneer, a leader in automotive safety, needed to empower its global teams with a comprehensive Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) solution to support cutting-edge product innovation. The company’s existing tools, including an aging IBM DOORS implementation, were no longer sufficient to meet the stringent requirements of the automotive industry. Veoneer needed a modern requirements management system tailored to its unique needs, one that could align with its “1 Veoneer, 1 Process” mandate and ensure end-to-end traceability and compliance with Automotive SPICE and other industry standards.

Tim Brennan, IT Engineering ALM Manager at Veoneer, highlighted the company’s goal: “We wanted one-stop shopping. We didn’t want to have to train people on 10 different tools”. The challenge was to streamline processes, enhance compliance, and provide complete traceability across the product lifecycle.

In 2018, Veoneer embarked on a structured evaluation process to find an all-in-one ALM solution that could replace its fragmented tool landscape. A team of key stakeholders from product assurance, program management, and engineering was assembled to lead the search. The criteria included ease of use, comprehensive coverage of the software and systems development cycle, and end-to-end traceability.

After evaluating several options, the decision came down to Polarion and Codebeamer. “In the end, it came down to Polarion and Codebeamer, and Codebeamer won out. It was more intuitive. It had a better interface, and it was easier to learn”, said Brennan. Codebeamer’s performance, particularly in data injection and retrieval, as well as its superior traceability features, made it the ideal choice. Veoneer transitioned seamlessly from its old system to Codebeamer, integrating it across global teams and various engineering disciplines.

The rollout of Codebeamer at Veoneer was methodical and smooth, thanks to careful planning and the versatility of the solution. The company used Codebeamer as the project repository for the ALM implementation itself. “It’s so versatile, I can use it for IT engineering”, noted Brennan.

Veoneer loaded its ALM requirements into a Codebeamer project, which was then used to validate requirements and manage a backlog of outstanding ALM requests. Whenever Codebeamer or an integrated tool was upgraded, regression testing ensured nothing was broken.

The immediate benefits of the transition were evident. The ALM user base doubled within two years, growing from 1,100 to 6,900 employees. Initial onboarding time was slashed from 4.5 days to just 45 minutes, thanks to a comprehensive training video. “We did this right out of the box. It took me an hour to set up, and I could have never done this in any other tool”, Brennan said.

The consolidation of multiple tools into a single ALM solution resulted in substantial savings on direct tooling costs. “Our entire business uses Codebeamer, it’s not just for engineering anymore”, Brennan noted. Codebeamer helped Veoneer unify multiple departments under the “1 Veoneer, 1 Process” umbrella, accelerating development cycles and fostering a cohesive approach to product delivery.
